Peri-Peri Goodness

January 28, 2013

Ever since I got Kim’s recipe on how to make your own peri-peri sauce, I think I’ve tried numerous ways to serve the much loved sauce. I like it so much that I bookmarked the recipe page on my computer, as well as my phone.

Well, you can always do the short cut by buying the bottle of sauce from the supermarket, at about Rm10.90 each but nothing beats making fresh peri-peri sauce on your own! You can check it out on how to make the sauce from Kim’s blog.

I’ve made slight amendments though, to suit my palate. I added a tablespoon of paprika, one whole lemon instead of half and of coz, add more cili padi because I love my peri-peri super hot! The results are amazing! Everybody loves it! Thanks, Kim for this awesome recipe! And it really makes a big difference using red capsicum instead of green ones. Oh, I’ve tried! :D

The sauce is really good to go with any meat that you like. Heck! I think you can even use it as salad dressing! So here are some of the dishes I made and diversify by using just this sauce.

peri chicken thigh

Peri-peri chicken thigh with mashed potatoes and salad

Baked as per Kim’s recipe

peri pork

Fried pork in peri-peri sauce

Marinade overnight and stir fried in vegetable oil

  peri-peri chicken pizza

Peri-peri chicken with capsicums, onions and mushrooms pizza

Marinade overnight and stir fried in little vegetable oil.  Add on chopped capsicum, mushrooms and lastly onions. Lay generously on ready made pizza dough, slightly oiled with olive oil. Add on peri-peri sauce if you like, sprinkled with grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 220C.

Chinese New Year Shopping

January 27, 2013

I guess the few days off, and a long weekend is good for some serious CNY shopping. Didn’t want to be so disorganized like last year, I actually wrote down a list of things to buy this time. Last year, ever since I learn how to make nian gao (sticky rice cake) from scratch, I had to drive to the bakery shop like 5x to add on ingredients and also packaging.. because one after another, my relatives kept asking me to make them a nice pair of fish! I guess not this year. They must pay! Nothing comes free now! Times are bad! Haha!

Was at Tesco Kepong last Thursday for some CNY shopping. The beeline was unbelievable! And this is probably the first time I see a hypermarket ran out of trolleys. I guess it’s good to just take whatever trolley you might get from the parking lot on your way to the shopping mall because you definitely won’t get any trolleys, standing at the trolley counter! I guess it wasn’t so bad the last time. Even on normal weekends, hypermarkets won’t run out of trolleys.

We bought the usual stuffs for CNY – some groundnuts, butter, flour, sugar, canned food, drinks, etc. We don’t have to  buy nian gao and cookies anymore because I will be baking them. In fact, I took opportunity this long weekend to test run to bake some cookies before CNY – to make sure they are edible! Luckily, Quan Quan, Lok Lok, Sasha and Ern Ern enjoyed the cookies and they even give a few comments to improvise it! Actually, they are very diplomatic.. everything also say very nice. Haha! And the kids enjoy the heart shaped butter cookies the most.. and it’s probably the most difficult to make. It’s difficult to make sure the dough is chill enough for the cookie cutter to slice through. In our tropical climate, I find, we could only slice maximum 10 cookies and we had to put the dough back to the fridge to harden it again! So, I won’t be making butter cookies anymore because of this! The cookie custard taste more or less the same and is much more easier to make. Mom already made her order for salted chocolate cookies. She said, they smell really good and nice to eat. For someone who dislike eating chocolates, I am surprised she said the salted chocolate cookie is nice!

Another 2 weeks to go before we welcome the year of Snake.. I’ve made some plans – when to start making nian gao, fatt gou and cookies.. we are very glad that, this year, we don’t have to clean the house too much because we already did during the renovation and painting of our house. We will just need a few hours to spruce things up before CNY. Hmmph… perhaps it’s time to use some credit card points to redeem the electric cooker to be used as steamboat this CNY…

So, how is your preparation for CNY?

Mangsa Pendidikan

January 22, 2013

I guess many of us have watched that “Listen woman” fiasco on youtube. Well, seriously, I didn’t even get past watching till the animals part simply because I couldn’t stand her voice and her arrogant face! The audacity of flexing muscles just because you are an “adult” and very “educated”? Shame on you! Someone please get me a bag! I want to vomit!

Her arrogance reminded me of my school days. Being a rather avid reader since I was young, I gather my language skills developed tremendously, not to boast, but, I was above average in the Malay Language. I could write eloquently, thanks to mom for giving me extra pocket money to buy magazines like Dewan Siswa and Dewan Masyarakat. Of coz, I still had a life because I read Gila-Gila too. I love “Tiga Dara Pingitan”! That’s my favorite cartoon series! Haha!

When I was in Form 3, I took extra tuition class on this subject just to make sure I score well. When I was in the tuition class, I always did the homework that the tuition teacher gave us, on top of our school work given by teachers in school. I like writing essays and I found I could write in free flow format. Imagine, that time, without using computers, I didn’t even need a draft. I could just write on and on, in the exams to make it a final piece! The teacher in my tuition class was rather impressed with my essays and he would read them to the class, as an example of good writing and told me to keep it up.

Then, I got into Form 4. As usual, during the first few weeks in class, I already aimed to give my teachers a good impression. I wrote with all my heart for the first test in that language for teachers to gauge our standard. I received some 89% for that essay itself, the highest in class. Then, I was called to the front of the class when the teacher finally realized, I am a Chinese. She looked at me in disbelief.

She
: Ini karangan you tulis kah?

Me: Kalau bukan saya, siapa yang tulis?

She: I masih musykil lah.

Me: Kenapa?

She: Macam mana you boleh tulis karangan begitu baik?

Me: Sebab saya pandai. (HAHAHAHHAHAHHA in my heart)

She didn’t find it amusing.

She: You tiru kah?

Me: Kalau saya tiru, cikgu pergi cari lah contoh karangan ini. Tengok kalau cikgu boleh jumpa.

At this point, she’s pissed off already. And I was even more pissed off because I was accused of cheating!

She: Bawak exercise book! I nak tengok tulisan you!

Me: Ok.

Brought books to her to see.

She: I masih musykil.

Then I got pissed and brought my SRP result to prove I have what it takes.

Me: Cikgu, saya dapat A1 untuk SRP BM lah.

After this, the whole class roared with laughter. The teacher’s face was all red because she embarrassed herself. I suddenly became the heroin in the class for standing up for truth.

The teacher didn’t stop there. She slashed my points to only 50% by claiming not enough content. I was devastated. But from that day onwards, nobody in the class paid attention to her whenever she asked us questions – everyone of us, stood united against her. She would just come to class to teach but nobody would respond to her. We will be doing other work while in her class, Maths, Biology, Physics, etc and nobody paid her any attention. Sometimes, she would make all of us stand up the whole period and only allowed us to sit down if we answered her questions/responding to her questions but nobody answered her. When she called our names one by one, we gave her the standard answer to her question, “Entah lah”. So all of us remaining standing till the 40 minutes were up! So damn cool! I wish all of us have the strong will of 16 year olds who stood united with their friends to face tyranny and injustice.

I went on to score A2 for my Malay in my SPM. The BM teacher was “proud” of me because I was her student, she went about telling other teachers, I was a product of her class. But I totally ignored acknowledging her when I went back to school to collect my SPM results while thanking other teachers in front of her.

Contractors from Hell

January 21, 2013

Sometime in August 2012, we planned to do some renovation works to our house. We have been staying here the past 20 years, so it’s time to do some major repairs. Two of our bathrooms were leaking and, after a colleague’s near brush of death with robbery in his house, just opposite ours in July, we think it’s better be safe than sorry. So, we decided to install a grill at the balcony behind our house. So we shopped around for a quote but some people already taking orders for CNY, so they couldn’t do for us. We decided to stick to the previous contractor who did a minor retiling for us some years ago, who happened to be my sister’s friend. So, the renovation works only started on Oct 20.

So, we gave the job to him. He said, retiling the bathrooms would take 1-2 weeks but we have to make do with one toilet for the time being because he simply couldn’t ask the same sifu to come tile our toilets on different days! So, once and for all. Okay, so we agreed. It took more than 2 weeks for the bathroom and I really got impatient. Coupled with different orders from my first aunt also further complicated matters. Imagine, you ask her for her input and she refused to give any ideas till last minute, do changes here and there. Yes, this is not the contractor’s fault I know. The thing I cannot tahan is, how the main contractor, ie. my sis’ friend coordinate his work. He simply cannot coordinate things properly. People just show up at our house, without notice, don’t even know what they were supposed to do. There’s this guy, who install the bathroom doors, who bought the doors two inches too short for the door – so basically, we give free show whenever we take shower inside!

Then, he had to reorder a new door… which is okay but then, instead of positioning the door latch to the pre-existing hole created by the previous guy, when installing the first door, he went on to drill another hole in the newly tiled ceramic wall. Wah lao eh… we were so furious!

So, the plan of 2 weeks top went on and on for 1.5 months. We decided not to let him do the exterior painting because we know how shitty his job would be. Who knows what might even happen if we continue to hire him to paint the walls. And we can’t even choose the colors we want for exterior walls because he said, only white and charges us Rm7,500. So we decided to cancel the painting job.

On 8th of December 2012, a new painter came to our house to have a look. Seeing him so earnestly jotting down the colors we wanted from the ICI Dulux catalogue, we think, our house should be in good hands. At first, we decided to just paint the exterior of our house because the paint is already too old and we haven’t been painting for over 10 years. But he suggested we should also paint the inside. Since, he’s doing the job, might as well get the whole house done. He said don’t ask for discount anymore because he will help to fix whatever needs to be fixed including patching up the decay in the door panes, will also paint the grills, as well as the brick fence in front of my house porch and the house gate. We were thinking, ok, since he’s going to do it, it’s ok to pay him that much for his work. Since he is highly recommended by a fellow colleague, we relented even though the price he quoted us is way off our budget at RM13,000.

We gave him RM5,000 as downpayment and also to buy paint. So off he went to buy paint. He started work on 14th December 2012, right after Nuzul Quran holiday because we were not in. The first few days of work, he was all hardworking and we find he is quite a fast worker, eventhough he’s doing it himself and all alone. So I asked him, did he come alone? So he said, yes. And asked me not to worry because he will finished on time. Maximum one month. But he said, he can finish painting my house in 2 weeks tops and he will hire 4-5 people to help. So we were glad when he said that.

When he started to paint the kitchen, things went downhill from there. My mom asked him when will he patch the decay at the bathroom door because, he’s only working 3-4 hours a day, come at 8 am and leave by 12 pm. Why can’t he just finish his job as fast as possible and stay longer throughout the day to finish the job? He said, it’s not his job to fix the decay. My mom and aunt got furious because he didn’t do what he promised he would do! And he always came alone and didn’t hire anybody to help him as promised!

Then never mind. He further threaten us if we don’t pay him the balance, he will stop work and said, we can never find anyone this last minute since it’s nearing CNY (when he threaten us, it was end of December already). Anyway, I prayed over this shit and leave this matter to God. I just say, “God, please help us to find a good replacement so we don’t have to suffer all these nonsense. I leave everything in your hands! Amen!”

Lo and behold. The abandoned house behind ours started renovation works after almost a year, the new owner bought over the place. We have seen numerous people coming to look at the old house but nothing was done for more than a year till now.

While the idiotic painter was spray jetting the walls, getting them ready to be painted, he was doing half assed job as usual. He didn’t want to move his ass to scrap the dangling old paint and said, it’s like that one.. if the jet spray couldn’t get rid of it, there is no need to scrap it! So, we got really fed up and fired him on the spot. He still couldn’t believe we fired him and even begged for his job back! But still insist on us to pay him the balance! So we said no! Please get the fuck out!

We hired the Indonesians who are renovating the house behind ours at fraction of a costs! For only Rm1,500, they helped to paint the exterior walls (3 sides since my house is an end lot) and also the gates and grills! So in a way, we saved some money, some Rm4k! And nothing can beat the satisfaction of firing the annoying “fly” painter who kept buzzing our ears for more payment for the half assed job he has done! It was also a blessing because during the time, the idiotic painter was dragging us, it had been raining cats and dogs, making it difficult to plan for painting! Thank you God for sunny days when we started to paint the exterior walls!

Well, I simply want to give thanks to God.. that really…..even if you think the matter is so small and minute in life – they still matter to him! Even my mom kept saying, Thank you “tee gong” for “poh pi” us. Haha! She didn’t know I prayed to my God.

Sleepy

January 17, 2013

My close friends would know, I can be a really lazy ass. I like to sleep. A lot. Most weekends, when I have nothing much to do, I would usually sleep it off. I can fall asleep at anytime, anywhere.. in fact, everywhere. Even if somebody drive me to work, even only for 5 minutes, I could press the snooze button and black out. And it’s really embarrassing that, I could sleep soundly while having facial – soundly here means snoring.

Just yesterday, a new colleague asked me to join her for yoga class after work. I said I cannot. She was puzzled on why I couldn’t. I said, I am very bad at one particular position. That is the corpse position. She scratched the head and said, "But that’s the easiest pose!"

"Yes, that’s the easiest but I am most afraid of………..", I said sheepishly.

"Why??" she asked.

"Coz I tend to fall asleep and snore DAMN LOUD that it will wake others!" I said.

She laughed.

I was just having conversation with a friend sometime this week and said, I might be suffering from sleep apnea. I know, I did coz earlier, I do get choked sometimes during my night sleep that kept me awake. Thank God the problem has subsided. But now, don’t know somehow, I just tend to snore louder. Snoring is definitely in my family’s genes. Even Ern Ern at age 2.5 years old snores in her sleep. Luckily my sis is a quiet sleeper… but my mom, dad and my brother are chronic snorers. If we travel together and stayed in the same room, you can hear the entire concert of symphonies throughout the room!

Maybe I should get a surgery to deal with it.. since losing weight is such a struggle.

Well, am writing this filler post coz I was a little drowsy at work after a good lunch meal. Haha.
