Restoran Sin Yit Sing, Seremban

Our trip to Melaka didn’t end in Melaka, it continued till Seremban! The weather in Melaka for the past two days was erratic. It rained almost the entire night after our 15 minutes walk along Jonker’s Walk. Potong stim habis! We had to seek shelter in Nancy’s Kitchen till late at night, then had to call it a night. On Sunday, it rained again too towards the evening, so we went to Dataran Pahlawan to get away from the rain. So, we didn’t get to sample much food in Melaka (har har har..we had gone to 5 restaurants in a day and it’s still not much compared to my previous trips to Melaka in a day!).

We decided to get away from Melaka and headed to Seremban to this restaurant which from the way I see it, quite popular with the locals and outsiders alike. A quick search on the internet reveals the same. I think this shop has been around for sometime now.

We chose to dine al fresco because it’s less suffocating compared to sitting in the restaurant. However, the weather was still super hot and we actually sweated buckets even before the food arrived.

We asked for some recommendations and we had some dishes that Lil had tried and confirmed it’s good. So, we ordered the following:-

Fish head noodles – almost every table had this pot of fish head noodles. The soup is overwhelmed with grounded pepper but I somehow liked it very much! I think I haven’t tasted equally good fish head noodles in KL, apart from the place where I used to dine for lunch when I was working nearby Jalan Yap Kwan Seng. The soup is hot, with grounded pepper and it sent wild tingling sensation down the throat as you sip the soup. I had most of the soup to myself!

Fried fish paste enveloped in chicken skin – it was recommended by the very nice and patient waiter but we didn’t like it. The chicken skin is not as crispy as we hoped it would be and somehow, I felt rather geli eating the “soggy” chicken skin.

Kong Pou Dim Kai (Frogs) – this one’s rather good. The mixture of onions, sliced ginger, dried chillis and frogs gave out mouth watering aroma and rather tantalizing to the taste buds.

Coconut Chicken Soup – I would prefer it if we don’t take this together with the fish head noodles. I somehow felt the fish head noodles soup is more appealing to me! But this is a rather tasty soup if you like herbs. We should have just ordered one soupy dish and not two in a row.

Marmite grilled crab – this one’s a winner! It came last as we have finished our rice and everything else, we were thinking we could not finish it. The smaller crabs were all sold out, so we settle for one big crab. Unlike other grilled crabs around Seremban, this is grilled with marmite and it’s quite a delish dish and the crab’s meat managed to stay fresh and sweet.

I still miss the grilled crabs at Kedai Makanan Seremban though, especially the condiment that came with it. Perhaps another time.

What’s the damage? For RM129.00, I think it’s rather reasonable!

Noteworthy Melaka

I guess Melaka does not need any more introductions with regards to food, particularly at Jonker’s Walk. I just would like to share some of the noteworthy food in Melaka that I tried over the weekend, away from crazy crowds! You should see the queue at the Chung Wah’s coffee shop selling Hainanese chicken rice ball, where I used to frequent whenever I am in Melaka. Not this time though. It seriously doesn’t make any sense to line up, stand in the heat just for a plate of rice balls!

1. Kedai Makanan Melo

We were lucky to chance upon this shop. As we were walking out from Aldy Chinatown Hotel towards the car park, we saw a queue for roasted duck and char siew at this coffee shop and decided to join in! A plate of char siew and a piece of duck drumstick cost RM10. We dug in and found the duck to be really delicious! It’s tender, ripe in juice and very pleasing to the tongue. It’s not too hard or too soft. Thinking about it now makes my mouth water for more! The char siew is rather mediocre though.

2. Moods Café at Aldy Chinatown Hotel

For the price of RM230 nett, we were also given 3 vouchers for breakfast. You get to choose big breakfast, cornflakes, etc. The girls went for big breakfast, which consists of a chicken sausage, one hash brown, two toasted bread, omelet, two slices of turkey ham, baked beans, slices of tomato and cucumber. The set comes with a mug of coffee and a glass of orange juice. Priced at RM15 per set, I guess it’s a steal! Where else would you get such big breakfast for such price in KL?? The omelet is worth mentioning because I think I have yet to taste such good omelet before in KL. No picture because I was late for breakfast. We shared 3 sets of big breakfasts among 4 of us because the portions were too big.

Popiah with lard!

3. Poh Piah Lwee

Strictly for those who love lard! You may opt to leave out the parsley. We had 3 portions of this. The last round I came, I find the popiah skin was rather too thick. This time, the popiah skin was just nice. We had the curry laksa as well. I quite like the curry laksa because it came with generous serving of taufu pok! The girls find it ordinary.

Cendol durian

4. Tart Tart Bakery

I think I did mention a few times of Tart Tart Bakery in my previous outings to Melaka. Tart Tart Bakery is just a stone’s throw away from Chung Wah’s coffee shop (Hainanese chicken rice ball). This time round, we had the durian cheese tart, yam tart and Portuguese egg tart. The durian cheese is really good. The rest were ordinary lah. It’s better to have durian cheese tarts at the restaurant while it’s still fresh. The durian cendol here is also quite tasty. It comes with a dash of durian flesh, and not directly blended with the ice. One of the girls found it a bit off putting. For me, it’s great!

Strawberry Mille Crepe & White Chocolate Cheesecake

5. Nadeje Patisserie

A quick search on the internet showed that Mille Crepe has been in Melaka a long time ago! We only found out about it when YCF showed us the article on Star Metro on Melaka makan-makan. We brought along the newspapers cutting with us. We went to the Dataran Pahlawan’s branch.

It was a really hot day. The café was not packed. But the moment we got ourselves into the shop, droves of people appeared out of nowhere and started coming in as well! We were “lucky” to be seated at the rattan sofa in the air conditioned cafe. So, we thought. Mana tau. Lil was bitten by some bugs from the rattan sofa! I guess it’s better to take away the Mille Crepe instead of having it there.

We had the Strawberry mille crepe and White Chocolate Cheese cake. The Mille Crepe tasted really awesome! The layers of cream and vanilla custards were pleasing to the palate and unlike cheese cakes, this cake is not too filling. Instead of having one slice only, we ordered another double chocolate mille crepe to satisfy the glutton in us. We wanted to try the original but the shop insisted that we buy the entire cake if we want to, so we didn’t. Then after sitting there for 30 minutes, we saw other people who came in later, got their original Mille crepe. We were pissed! I guess nobody wanted to buy the entire cake and since it’s already 6 pm, they had no choice to cut and sell them in pieces.

So, remember to take away if you still wish to try the cake even after reading this!

I am glad that Mille Crepe is available in KL/PJ now!

Pengat Durian

6. Nancy’s Kitchen

We were walking along Jonker’s Walk for 15 minutes before the rain suddenly poured mercilessly on us. A quick look around, there were many pubs but we wanted to have some snacks and didn’t wish to eat fries or drink beer. We chanced upon Nancy’s Kitchen and sought refuge from the rain.

Lil had a few meals here before and she enjoyed them very much, especially the assam bak. Since we just had our dinner at San Pedro’s, we opted for some snacks. We chose the kuih koci, lepat kacang and nyonya bak zhang. The waiter recommended a few dishes for us but we told him, we just want some light snacks. He suggested pengat durian, apam balik durian and otak-otak. We just went for the first two and decided to order acar and ngoh hiang.

The pengat durian is a winner! I seriously don’t know what pengat durian is and was rather surprised that it came in the form of glutinous blue and white rice and serve with durian “gravy” and banana slices. Two thumbs up! The other kuehs were okay except for the apam balik durian which is rather mediocre and tasted rather bland. All in all, it was a satisfying meal.

Just as we finished our snacks, the rain decided to pour even more torrential and it had been way past their business hour, 10.30 pm! But the owner, Nancy and her staff were nice enough to let us sit at the dining area to wait for the rain to stop.

Restaurant San Pedro, Melaka

Over the weekend, I made a short trip to Melaka with the girls. It has been 8-9 years since we went to Melaka for the first time together and stayed over at my superior’s humble home. This time, we put up a night at Aldy Chinatown hotel. At RM230 nett, it’s quite a bargain. The room is big and spacious and clean. The downside is probably, we had to climb stairs as there is no elevator. Haha! Lazy people lah!

Before going for this trip, I checked online for blogs for the best Portuguese food along the Portuguese Settlement in Melaka. I didn’t find a really good recommendation. So far, I had eaten in Portuguese settlement at restaurants  mentioned in those blogs 3x and found that the food were rather forgettable and the long wait was totally not worth it. So I looked for really authentic Portuguese food and found this restaurant – San Pedro Restaurant, Melaka. The blog said that, the restaurant closes at 7.30 pm so we better be early. Doesn’t really make any sense to close shop by 7.30 pm on a weekend! I was skeptical.

My ex superior is from Melaka. She suggested in order to have really authentic Portuguese food, we should look for houses to dine-in instead of having dinner at the rows of shops facing the sea. The newly renovated sea terrace is rather impressive. It’s quite a nice place to take an evening stroll to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, the moment you got out from the car, there will be hordes of restaurant owners and waiters or waitresses hassling you to go to their shops for dinner. We just smiled at them and said, we will consider.

Sharp at 6 pm, we went to San Pedro situated along the D’Aranjo Road (just behind the row of shop) but found the restaurant to be empty. We thought it was not open. The shop was not even locked! We looked at the dilapidated shop and thought, it was closed for good. One of us went inside to check and there was nobody. Just as we decided to leave, two ladies walked by. We asked if this shop is closed for good, one of the ladies said, it’s open and she will cook for us. The ladies are the owners of the shop! Haha! A quick check with them, the shop opens at 6 pm to 10 pm. Not too sure when it’s closed though, but you may want to give them a call if you decided to visit.

The owner did confess that, she would close shop as soon as she sold all her fish. She limits her fish to only 8 per day and as soon as her customers who called to book came, she would leave the shop early. I guess the blogger who said, the shop close at 7.30 pm must have found the shop on a very good day because all fishes would be finished by then. He probably got the last fish!

We asked for recommendations and the cook suggested these few dishes – baked fish, fried brinjal, squid fritters and Debal’s curry. I think I had been to the restaurants facing the sea a few times to try their Debal’s curry or Devil’s curry but never get the chance because they always don’t have it! So, we decided to go ahead with the dishes recommended. After 40 minutes wait, the food was served!

Baked Fish

The baked fish (ikan merah was used) had slightly smoky smell. I didn’t like it at first bite but somehow, as you eat more, the flesh of the fish is rather sweet and melts in your mouth. So it’s quite a delight to tuck in. The fish was baked to perfection – it was neither overcooked nor undercooked, which is good. It’s really refreshing to finally have a good baked fish, unlike the previous times of baked fish – they are always tasted rather bland and served “swimming” in chilli oil!

The fried brinjal was cooked with sambal dried shrimps. We like this because it’s not too oily and the texture of the brinjal is still intact.

Debal’s curry

The Debal’s curry is everyone’s favorite. I would prefer the chicken to be more cooked but the girls prefer it this way – just nice. The chicken is smooth, the dish is laced with generous slices of potatoes and onions. The curry has a distinctive taste, not something that we are used to and it’s not too salty. After we have eaten everything, my ex superior still dipped her spoon into the curry and lapped everything up!

The squids fritters are equally good because they are not over coated with thick flour. They are sweet and springy. The chilli condiment that came with it is a real winner. I even used the condiment on the fried brinjal!

As we were tucking away in our delicious meal, a family came to pack their baked fish which they pre-ordered. Then a guy in big motorbike, who traveled all the way from Singapore came alone. From the warm welcome he received from the owner, I guess he’s probably a local boy who went to Singapore to work.  He had the squid fritters and fried brinjal.

For RM78 for 4 persons – with freshly squeezed orange and lime as drinks, I gather it’s a pretty much satisfying meal. I guess this beats dining at the much more crowded and over commercialized restaurants facing the sea. So, the rule of the thumb – restaurants packed to the brim indicated good food do not apply here!

Melaka Revisited

Jalan-Jalan di Melaka

Melaka has always been one of my favorite places to go every year. I like the old charm that exudes from every little corner in the small town, the camaraderie of people from all walks of life and parts of the planet, how worship places are situated along the same small lorong, flanked by century old buildings with pork sellers, restaurants, little knick knack shops, etc cropping at rare intermediary lots. I just love old Melaka!

Last weekend, I made a trip down to Melaka to attend some function. At the same time, I took a walkabout the place. I guess the heat must have gotten me a little under the weather. I suffered “controllable” diarrhea. Haha! If you notice, there is no such thing as “controllable” diarrhea, but this was it. Every time I go to the bathroom, I had to go big. It was really uncomfortable.

However, this time, I managed to try the Poh Piah Lwee which I missed in my previous trip. After all the big hoo hah over it, I decided to try it this time. The popiah skin is slightly too thick for my liking. The fillings however caught me by surprise. It came with generous serving of lard. The first bite was quite a put off due to the thick popiah skin, but subsequent bites were more pleasant and I ended liking it because presence of pork lard and siew yok smell. It is nothing like the normal popiah I had before! For those who dislike parsley, please let them know in advance!

Another new gem I found in this trip is the nasi lemak sold at the end of the Jonker’s Walk. It came in a small basket like the ones sold at old town but this one only cost RM4.50! Such a good buy considering it came with a piece of ayam rendang!

It was exhilarating to come to Melaka at night instead of the normal one day trip. We got there on Friday night and took night shots. It was unbelievably dumb of me to even forget my tripod! Most of the night shots were taken without tripod, so forgive the shaky hands. Lesson no. 1 – never ever forget the tripod. It’s your best friend for night shots.

An Outing to A Famosa Resort

Over the weekend, the family went to A Famosa Resort in Alor Gajah, Melaka. A quick check online didn’t specify much information but found some blogs with many complaints! Lol!

I was skeptical to go at first. My third aunt has a bad knee, so we decided that walking about Melaka town is out of the question. Since we were not sure where to bring the family in Melaka, we decided to stay a night at A Famosa Resort.

We left home at almost 10 am after mom fussed over the children, getting them dressed and packing their things. We went to Clan Restaurant at Sri Petaling for breakfast. This restaurant serves good dim sum and kai wor pao. The kai wor pao is a combination of char siew pao and loh mai kai. For those who love both, it’s good to order this.

After breakfast, we headed for Melaka. Traffic was smooth and nice. There weren’t many cars on the road. We reached Alor Gajah and went straight to the Safari World as the villa check in time was at 4 pm.

The ticketing booth is quite ridiculous. It’s a weekend and I was surprised only one person manning the three counters. Perhaps it was lunch hour. Anyway, they can opt for earlier lunch and rotate. It’s really stupid that they did not have a signboard to let you know the prices of the tickets. Then I realized that they charged foreigners differently. Locals were charged RM38 for adult and RM28 for children for Safari World and foreigners were charged RM58! A check on most blogs, they were posted in 2007 – so prices had since increased from RM35 to a steep RM38.

I find the ticketing system is chaotic. They have the same white color band with bar code for all amusement parks. They should have come up with something like color coded so that the staff don’t have to stress out for no reason. Imagine have to check one by one. If there were hordes of people, it would be chaotic.

Our timing couldn’t be better. We checked in at 1.30 pm after queuing for some 15 minutes at the ticketing counter.

The first show started at 2.15 pm, Wild Wild West. It has a couple of cowboys, Red Indians and horses running around. It’s just like the show I saw in Thailand. In fact, the setting is almost the same. I guess you don’t have to travel all the way to Chonbhuri for this show. You can get it here at A Famosa Resort. QQ was scared when he heard loud banging and explosion of guns. So if you have children, I suggest you cover their ears or hold them tight. It was quite enjoyable, but I do hope that they shorten the chit chatting and get into actions right away. The Red Indian dude is cute, though!

Right after the Wild Wild West, we made our way to the Multiple Animal Show. They have animals playing golf, playing dead, playing doctor, etc. it was not really enjoyable as I somehow felt pity for the animals having to do all the nonsense for the small token of food towards end of each trick. It reminded me of us. We work hard and run around like a monkey just to put food on the table. Same concept! But this is a form of exploiting animals, though it’s not as bad as some places which extract bile from a bear alive. I watched it over the tv during one of my hotel stays and felt totally upset about it.

After the multiple animal show, we went for the bird show. I enjoyed the bird show as it was something different. You have to duck your head when the eagle is flying low to avoid your head from being scratched by its sharp talon. My first aunt, being the obstinate one, didn’t want to sit down and preferred to stand up. We nagged her to sit down when the eagle was about to fly and fortunately, she relented. Somehow, we joked about her toupee. Both my cousin brother and I were giggling and wondered what if the eagle grabbed her false hair – it would be super hilarious. The emcee is the same guy from the Multiple Animal Show. What I didn’t like about the show was, they asked for money from guests and made the parrots went collecting money from the people who handed out money. It was said to be given as donation. Yeah right. Minimum RM10!

The next show was the Elephant Show. I guess the elephants and trainers are from Thailand. They did the same elephant show in Thailand – playing ball, painting, massaging, etc. I guess Safari World has the same concept as the one in Thailand – in terms of layout, shows and performers. The emcee is the same guy from the Multiple Animal Show and the Bird Show.. must be very, very short handed huh? We have some visitors from Iraq and they were actually movie stars in the hometown. That explained the two hand held camera man running around taking shots of the stars making the fool out of themselves. They pretty much enjoyed the show. They were even offered massage from the elephants. When the show finished, they spotted QQ and asked for permission to take picture with the cute toddler. Who would have thought QQ might be to be famous in Iraq some day!

We headed for the truck station after all the shows. It was quite a hectic schedule, running from one show to another so, I guess RM38 is quite well spent. Imagine you have to feed all the performers in the show; the animals!

We boarded the truck station to check out animals in the safari. I find the safari is quite well maintained. We were guided by a bored looking middle aged Chinese man driving the truck. Half of the time, I couldn’t comprehend what he was saying till he switched to Mandarin. He was nice enough to make brief stop for us to take pictures of the animals in the “wild”.

The route to safari is quite a bumpy ride. Hence, pregnant ladies and people who have weak hearts are not allowed to be on board.

We came out from the safari with smiles on our faces and were glad it was a good day out. We headed to check into our 3-bedroom villa. The website showed super nice villas and bungalows but they didn’t put us up at the nice ones as seen on website. It was a good thing that I forgot how it looked like in the website that I would kick up a fuss if I don’t get the same. The one we went to wasn’t that bad either but, the room service is terrible. We were asked to check if there were towels and floor mats in the villa and to revert if there is none. So, we immediately called the reception to ask for them. They took almost an hour and 15 minutes to revert with the things. I was a little bit pissed as mom was screaming at the kids was splashing water all over the place at the backyard swimming pool. Mom messed up the kitchen and water was all over the floor. The whole place was a mess and we don’t have floor mat to wipe. And my third aunt used my brother’s towel as kitchen towel, thinking it was the hotel towel.

I read from blogs, we need to buy food vouchers if we wanted to eat lunch at the safari world. We came prepared. We brought along some biscuits and cookies for lunch since we had late breakfast and then, went to the villa to have early dinner which we brought ourselves – bread, bak kua, tuna spread, kuih muihs, butter spread, instant noodles in cups and heong peng from Taiping. We even brought two crates of mineral water (48 bottles).

There is no place for cooking and don’t even think about having utensils. They have only one measly ridiculously small kettle to boil water. My family are like a bunch of scouts – we are always prepared. We even brought our own forks and spoons, plates, mugs, boiling kettle and a pot! They don’t have dish washer either, so we ended up using a bar of soap to wash up. so much “service” for RM788 per night, huh?

Anyhow, just as we were about to leave the villa to head to our next destination, the Cowboy Town, they managed to send two persons to deliver our towels and floor mats. Meaning, we have double set of everything. Yeah. We prefer it that way as there were 11 adults and 3 kids. Mess is order of the day!

We reached Cowboy Town rather late, at about 8 pm. Again, there was a beeline at the ticketing counter with one person manning the counter. It was really annoying.

While waiting for my sister to get the tickets, I was watching some people performing at the entrance. They hired a few Mak Nyahs (Ah Kua) dancing. QQ was very excited and went to dance along with them much to everyone’s amusement.

When we went in, it was already time for the show to start at 8.30 pm. We didn’t manage to get a good seating as there was a huge crowd at the entrance waiting earlier. It is mind boggling that the management decided to clog the entrance to the show area with a platform for patrons to take pictures with the lion cub. I found it utterly stupid. After we got stuck in the sea of people, everyone grew impatient and shouted “Oi!!!” then they finally let us in.

As I was seated at the far end of the 50m runway, I didn’t manage to take good pictures of the fire eater. I probably enjoy the fire eating part the best. The cute Red Indian guy earlier came and performed as well, so did the emcee, the guy who got shot dead at the Wild Wild West show, the Mak Nyahs at the entrance came in to do some belly dancing in some obscene see-through pants. This place is totally under staff. Heck. Even the same parrot in earlier bird show came and cycled on thin wire during the last gig. While waiting for the carnival to start, the management played some Arabic songs and you get to see a bunch of Middle Eastern men took to the runway and danced away. It was quite fun actually to watch them. It’s like we were visiting their country instead of the other way round.

The carnival-like show ended with three-minute fireworks at the end of the 50m runway. So, when you reached the end of the show of the very long carnival parade, at about 9.45 pm, it’s better for you to move your ass to the end of the lane where fireworks burst to the sky. Don’t you think, a round stadium is more appropriate than a long runway? It caused unnecessary stampede for people to move around from one end to another. Luckily, when I was there, the crowd of people is still controllable.

Thinking the hectic day is over, we were soon walking towards the lantern show. It seems, the RM38 for adult and RM33 for children that we paid covered the lantern area. The place was not properly maintained. Some lanterns were broken and were not replaced. I mistakenly took the fallen peacock as a clam!

Anyway, since everyone is tired, we waited for the acrobatic show from China. It was quite amusing that this place is manned by only four persons. There were three male jugglers and a pretty Chinese lady. She did all the emceeing, the hula hoop and lastly, the balancing act on her forehead with hula hoop swinging at her waist and hands swinging two handkerchiefs simultaneously!! My aunts were screaming in anxiety. It was kinda pitiful as the place they performed in is so run down and the male performers were wearing dirty clothes like some street performers. It made me felt like giving them tips at the end of the show for such entertaining show.

I couldn’t stand the place as it was infested with mosquitoes. I couldn’t wait to go back to the villa for a bath and sleep.

The whole resort is crowded with people from the Middle East. Everywhere you look, you see ladies in black veil in such a hot tropical climate. I wonder why they even bother to take pictures. Sometime I wonder how the men could recognize their wives on the streets with all the covering up. They even served Middle Eastern food and played Middle Eastern songs to accommodate the visitors.

The next morning, since we only have 6 vouchers for breakfast – the six of us went to the Safari World café for breakfast. Kinda stupid, isn’t it? They place you at the villa some 5 minutes drive away from the café and expected you to drive back all the way back to Safari World and pay RM3 for parking to have breakfast. Of course we didn’t pay for the parking. We went in before 8.30 am to be entitled for the free parking. The breakfast is not buffet breakfast and you get to choose only one out of three types of meals offered – the nasi lemak, the porridge or western. We opted for 3 nasi lemak and 3 western food. The nasi lemak is quite mediocre and perhaps, everyone should try the western styled food.

After everyone is awake, we left the villa in good spirit. We made a brief stop in Melaka for lunch. We didn’t get to eat the my favorite chicken rice ball shop at Kedai Kopi Chung Wah as Melaka was infested with tourists on weekend and it was total madness! Never ever go to Melaka on weekends. The crowd is crazy! We headed home after everyone complained about the heat and QQ couldn’t stop whining and crying. It must have been very tiring since we all went to bed late last night.

All in all it was quite an enjoyable trip, despite a few chaotic moments.
